Working closely with the clients, Swedish artist and landscape architect Katarina Frank and Professor Colin Fudge, White Design designed a self-contained, single storey art studio.
Viewed from the outside, the building reads as a simple ‘box’, raised slightly above the ground, with cedar cladding boards running vertically up the elevations and over the mono-pitch roof.
The Greenheart building company worked with us to create the entire structure from timber, using locally sourced cedar. Internal surfaces are lined with plywood and cavities are filled with insulation made from recycled paper waste, making the building super-insulated.
Large north-facing windows bring daylight into the internal space, minimising the need for artificial lighting. At the same time, the windows are thoughtfully positioned and electronically controlled so that the building can be naturally ventilated.
