Working in partnership with ModCell, the UK’s leading straw bale construction experts, White Design has explored preliminary designs for a new training and leisure facility in central Cornwall. Low carbon materials are used throughout, with timber framing, locally sourced timber cladding, lime render and bio-diverse green roofs complementing the straw bale structure.
The accommodation includes a sports science classroom, training studio, offices, workshop and storage, and nestles discretely within a Cornish Mining World Heritage site.
The thermal insulation provided by the straw, coupled with natural ventilation, ensures a warm and healthy internal environment. The energy strategy for the site looks at a centralised system, topped up by smaller PV and solar thermal arrays on the roofs of the lodges.
