In the 1970s, this private school undertook an ambitious DIY project to build its own sports hall and design technology workshop. It was built largely with voluntary labour from pupils, staff, former pupils, parents and friends, under the direction of the technology master. Work began in August 1975, and it was officially opened in 1977.
Following the completion of a new sports hall in 2013, White Design has been approached to develop plans to explore the re-use of the original hall as an auditorium and music department.
The proposed scheme demonstrates how the main hall may include a mezzanine level for additional seating, while a new entrance foyer area provides space for public gatherings, exhibitions and socialising. New music class and practice rooms complete the accommodation. The existing hall is then overclad to improve its thermal performance, whilst internally careful consideration is given to acoustics for music and drama. The existing craft and art departments are retained and overclad to complete the rehabilitation of this much loved building.
