The work at St Andrew's Primary School had two specific aims; to link the two existing schools (one was previously a nursery school, the other a primary school), and to create a new building with additional classrooms. A limited time available for construction resulted in the new building being a prefabricated timber frame item. A limited budget meant that each part of the design had to work hard to add as much value as possible.
Consideration of the placing the new building has created a new and interesting external space around it which connects to the internal spaces; additional secure play environments were also created this way. A new plaza between the schools is the focal area for pupil drop off and collection. New trees in the plaza and plenty of doors opening onto it has created an area for pupils, parents and staff to interact at the beginning and the end of the school day.
An existing external courtyard in one of the existing buildings has been roofed to create a year round useable internal space that supports the curricular activities of the classrooms adjacent to it. It is naturally ventilated with exposed and colour coded services so that the technologies there can be seen by the pupils.
These facilities were constructed whilst the school remained operational and they were completed in March 2012.
