Commissioned in 2008, White Design collaborated with Llewelyn Davis Yeang to produce a masterplan and design code for the Ely Bridge site in South West Cardiff. The original design comprised of a mixed use development of 900 houses, a business area and community uses set along the northern bank of the River Ely.
White Design’s architecture and consultancy team generated the sustainability strategy, which included carbon accounting for the site to evaluate site energy requirements and specific masterplan and building design elements. The resultant design code and sustainble living brief were used as legal document through the procurement of a devlopment consortium to deliver the site. Key aspects of the design code included the integration of code for sustainable homes level 5, the aspiration to promote a One Planet Community by 2020, alngside other specific targets related to energy, water, transport and material use.
This has also been the subject of detailed research project into the potential effects of the UKCIP climate change scenarios on the site layout and house design. The study, which is funded by the Technology Strategy Board, is ongoing and includes a series of twenty design measures which could be implemented to adapt to potential climate outcomes. More information can be found under TSB design for future climate change.
