Working in partnership with ModCell, the UK’s leading straw bale construction experts, White Design has explored preliminary designs for a number of different lodge types, from 1-bed mini-lodges, to 3- bed family or group lodges. The discrete scale of the lodges allows them to work with the natural contours of the site, allowing the environment and landscape to prevail.
Low carbon materials are used throughout, with timber framing, locally sourced timber cladding, lime render and bio-diverse green roofs complementing the straw bale structure. The thermal insulation provided by the straw, coupled with natural ventilation, ensures a warm and healthy internal environment.
The energy strategy for the site looks at a centralised system, topped up by smaller PV and solar thermal arrays on the roofs of the lodges. Plans are already afoot to expand the solution to other sites across the south west of England and Wales.
