The plan was designed in close consultation with teaching staff and is described by our client, Manchester City Council, as its “most fit for purpose school”.
The £5.5 million project accommodates 420 primary school and 60 nursery school children. The brief emphasised the importance of child security, so the nursery section was designed to sit within a courtyard, away from the building perimeter and is enclosed by an unobtrusive, yet effective fence for further security.
The whole of the school is conceived as a teaching and learning tool, an example being the transparent rainwater pipe in the foyer which allows pupils and staff to observe and record how much rainwater is collected daily. Teachers and children access this data via their classroom computers and use it in a variety of ways.
