In 2013 White Design were commissioned by South Cerney Parish Council to create a contemporary, imaginative and sustainable community building for the village of South Cerney.
The community centre is now open and has been named ‘The Raymond Fenton Youth and Community Centre’ (Fenton’s). The building is made up of two main spaces, a café with an outside terrace, and a multi-purpose hall. There is also a meeting room that can be hired by clubs, committees and businesses.
Since opening in March 2017 Fenton’s has become the new home of the local R-Way Youth Group and has established a broad offer of fitness classes including Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and Ballet, as well as a café that is already very popular with the local community.
The project brief was developed with a fabric-first approach to energy performance, as well as consideration of other passive measures; these included orientating the building to reduce over-heating and maximising natural ventilation and daylight for the main spaces. The entire building structure was fabricated from cross-laminated timber panels with a glulam frame where necessary to span the larger hall and cafe spaces. The building has exceeded its design target for air permeability, creating comfortable internal spaces that support a wide range of activities.
