The Mill Design Code is one of two supporting documents to the Ely Bridge Urban Village Masterplan. White Design were lead authors of the design code working in collaboration with LLlewelyn Davies Yeang and the BRE. The second document the Sustainable Living Brief established a brief for the developers to develop a governance mechanism to assist the new inhabitants in their transition to a low carbon lifestyle.
The purpose of the code was to establish the sustainability performance criteria required to promote the ‘One Planet Wales’ agenda and test the viability of a range of energy options for the 900 home mixed use development.
The design code underpinned a procurement process where three sets of developers prepared financial bids and design proposals against the performance criteria.
The code contains residential typologies, construction standards, landscape recommendations and explains design strategies which can assist in achieving the performance objectives.
The project is also the subject of ongoing research funded by the Technology Strategy Board to assess the effects of the UKCIP climate scenario data for 2050 and 2080. An additional section to the code is being produced which will include additional adaptation design measures to create a more resilient community.
