Weydon School is a mixed gender comprehensive school, catering for pupils aged between 11 and 16. White Design previously led the design stage of the refurbishment of the school’s science facilities in 2007, where we were able to apply the innovative thinking gained through our role as Project Faraday consortium leader, we were delighted to be invited by the client to design a new extension for the expanding school in 2010.
Located centrally within the school grounds between the sports hall and tennis court, the new 6 classroom block replaces an existing 2 classroom unit and was completed by White Design in November 2010. The location of the building was informed by a separate masterplanning consultation process which was on-going between the school stakeholders and White Design.
The masterplan process assessed the existing school accommodation both internally and externally and suggested strategies to provide additional facilities for pupil number growth over a 5 year period. The proposals included redistributing the departments into a two house campus design using a phased approach which would enable the school to remain operational on the site during the construction process.
